The etymology of the word Latin ‘Rhinoceros’, Sanskrit ‘Siras’, English ‘horn’

‘கடு’ என்பது ஓர் பழந்தமிழ்ச் சொல். இச் சொல் பற்றித் தொல்காப்பியர் எழுதியுள்ளார். இச் சொல்லுக்குப் பத்து பொருள்களைக் அவர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். அப் பத்து பொருள்களில் கூர்மை என்பதும் ஒன்று. இக்’கடு’ என்னும் சொல், ‘கடி’ எனவும் இதே கூர்மை பொருளில் பழந்தமிழ் நூல்களில் ஆளப்பெற்றுள்ளது. ட>ர திரிபில் இக்’கடு’ சொல், ‘கர்’, ‘கர’ என்ற வடிவில் திரிபுற்றுக் கீழை, மேலை இந்தோ-ஐரோப்பிய மொழிகளில் இதே கூர்மைப் பொருளில் பல சொற்களாக விரிந்துள்ளது.

இக் ‘கடு’ சொல், கிரேக்கத்தில் keras என்னும் வடிவிலும், இலத்தீனத்தில் ceros என்னும் வடிவிலும் விலங்கின் கூர்மையான கொம்பினைக் குறிக்கின்றது. keras, ceros போன்ற மேலை இந்தோ-ஐரோப்பிய சொற்களுடன் தலையைக் குறிக்கும் சமற்கிருத siras என்னும் கீழை இந்தோ-ஐரோப்பிய சொல்லையும், இந்தோ-ஐரோப்பிய மொழிநூல் அறிஞர்கள் தொடர்புபடுத்தியுள்ளனர்.

இந்தோ-ஐரோப்பிய மொழிகளில் வழங்கும் keras, ceros. siras போன்ற வடிவங்கள், தமிழின் ‘கடு’ என்னும் சொல்லில் இருந்து தோன்றி வளர்ந்தன. இவ்வரலாற்றினைத் தன் கூர்த்த மதிநுட்பத்தால் ஆய்ந்தறிந்தவர் கு.அரசேந்திரனார். இந்நான்காம் பொழிவில், தான் பெற்ற இன்பத்தை இவ்வையகத்திற்கு வழங்குகிறார்.

‘kaṭu’ is an ancient Tamil word. Ancient literature Tolkāppiyam explains 10 meaning for the word ‘kaṭu’. Out of the 10 meanings, one meaning for ‘kaṭu’ is sharpness. The same word ‘kaṭu’ is referred as ‘kaṭi’ with the meaning ‘sharp’ in ancient Tamil literature.

With a phonics rule ṭa > ra change, the word ‘kaṭu’ has transformed to other forms such as ‘kar’, ‘kara’ with the same meaning ‘sharp’ into eastern Indo-European & western Indo-European languages.

This ‘kaṭu’ root word is represented as ‘keras’ in Greek; ‘ceros’ in Latin. Both represent animals' sharp horn in their head. Indo-European scholars have connected the words ‘keras’, ‘ceros’ with the Sanskrit word ‘siras’ meaning ‘head’.
